How Can I Keep on Hoping?

Outline on Sunday message “How can I keep on hoping? The scriptures” by Johnny.

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (‭Romans‬ ‭15‬:‭4‬ NIV)

1. God knows all of us & everything on us
God loves us

2. When discouraged know that God has a plan for us

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭13‬ NIV)

Ever feel you don’t belong in a school, workplace or even in a country?
We are created for heaven; citizens of heaven; God’s people

Square peg round hole

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. (‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭13-20‬ NIV)

Your Response to Suffering

The below is an excerpt On Character in Action taken from The Character of the Christian which is part of the reference materials used for the STM (Missions Trip) 2015.

“When God wants to drill a man
And thrill a man
And skill a man,
When God wants to mold a man
To play the noblest part;
When He yearns with all His heart
To create so great & bold a man
That all the world shall be amazed,
Watch His methods, watch His ways!
How He ruthlessly perfects
Whom He royally elects!
How He hammers him & hurts him,
And with mighty blows coverts him
Into trial shapes of clay which
Only God understands;
While his tortured heart is crying
And he lifts beseeching hands!
How He bends but never breaks
When his good He undertakes;
How He uses whom He chooses
And with every purpose fuses him;
By every act induces him
To try His splendour out –
God knows what He is about!”

Help shape believers lives & allow yourself to be shaped by God!

Hope of Righteousness

Sun Mar 22 message by Dr Lai

For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬ NIV)
We hear of many disasters occurring all over the world. Even in Malaysia we see flooding & natural disasters. We also see many people from organizations, including religious organizations, helping out. Do our charitable & righteous actions then help us to be saved before heaven’s gate?
The truth is that we are not saved through righteousness by good works & our own effort (aka legalism)
Matthew 5:20: For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
But we are saved by grace, receiving from God what we do not deserve through Christ.
People today filled with self-righteousness & pride
God hates the sin of pride, self-righteous, conceited
Move from actions & lists of things to do to freedom in Christ!
Repent of our ‘good deeds’?!
What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. (‭Philippians‬ ‭3‬:‭8-9‬ NIV)
Salvation involves:
  • Justification + Sanctification
  • Imputed + Imparted Righteousness
  • Forgiveness + Holiness
  • Justification – wholly God’s work
  • Sanctification – we work with God
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭12-13‬ NIV)
A Crown of Righteousness
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭7-8‬ NIV)
Does this mean God will reward Paul for all he has done?
Actually no! Paul said all he has done are like filthy rags
Look forward to His righteousness (not Paul’s!)
  • STOP trying to be good enough for heaven
  • LOOK to Jesus for God’s righteousness
  • GO on walking with the Spirit day by day
  • … Hoping for the crown of righteousness God will give us

Our Hope: the Appearing of Jesus Christ

From Sunday message on Titus 2:11-14 by Khai
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (‭Titus‬ ‭2‬:‭11-14‬ KJV)

Our Hope The Redemption of our Bodies

Scripture: Romans 8:18-25 / Speaker: Mr Sinnappan

‘If so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.’ (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭17‬ KJV)

1. The reckoning of our sufferings

#For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭18‬ KJV)

  • Yes we will go through suffering & disappointment but don’t lose heart.
  • Because we have a body of flesh.
  • Because we live in a sinful world.
  • Take sight away from around you & focus above.

“It is not merely that the glory is a compensation for the suffering; it actually grows out of the suffering. There is an organic relation between the two for the believer as surely as there was for the Lord” (F.F.Bruce on Eph 3:10)

2. The manifestation of the Sons of God

For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭19‬ KJV)

  • Our bodies yearn from liberty from whatever we are suffering.
  • Manifestation = display, show, reveal
  • The raptured church will appear with Him.

3. The reassurance of Hope through vanity

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭20‬ KJV)

4. The release into glorious liberty

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭21‬ KJV)

  • Bondage of corruption caused by sin of Adam’s fall.
  • Liberty with Christ from:
    • Corruption to in corruption
    • Dishonour to glory
    • Weakness to power
    • Natural to spiritual
    • Earthly to heavenly
    • Mortal to immortal
    • Death to life

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭14-15‬ KJV)

5. The redemption of our body
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭22-23‬ KJV)

  • We may have a lot of queries:
    • How far is heaven?
    • How long will it take?
    • What is rapture like?
    • Will we recognize our loved ones?
  • What we know is we will have a supernatural body that does things out physical body can do (2 Cor 5:8)
  • We should not worry but trust in the Lord’s plan
  • Like how a flower comes out from a seed
  • Salvation 1st stage: redemption of the soul from sin
  • Salvation final stage: redemption from the body from corruption upon death

6. The reality of the unseen hope

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭24‬ KJV)

  • Seen things physical, material, decays, does not last.
  • What cannot be seen is spiritual. Not bound by space, weight & time. Not temporal but eternal. (2 Pet 3:11)
  • We know it’s real as Jesus Christ proved with resurrection. He met, spoke & ate with many.

7. The readiness with patience

  • But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9 KJV)

Do you set your minds on things above instead of earth?

Communication with God

Communication with God.

– God too busy for you?

Mark 8:1-3 (Jesus show care physical needs/hunger/feeding crowd although he is probably tired with teaching & traveling 3days)

– Too busy for God?

Matthew 6:25-33 (Worry eat/drink/wear… Do not worry – God knows you need them)

– We need to spend time daily with God. When we are busy, stressed out & have no time, that’s when we need to spend DOUBLE THE TIME with God.

Learn about spending quality time communicating with God.

Why God – Why does God want you to communicate with Him?

– God of relationships

– God talks directly with Abraham, Moses, etc

– He is our Father

– To love God & be loved

God wants you to love Him, honor Him & have regular communication with Him

Illustration (I): Dating tackle bf/gf or marriage keep relationship on fire. Gifts. Show love. Spend time. Most important to talk & communicate. To really know each other.

Application (A): How would you describe your personal relationship with God? Do you desire to know God a little bit better every day?

How God – How does God communicate with you?

– As the Father speaking to His child

– As the Word of God (the Bible) speaking to your heart

– As the Holy Spirit’s small soft voice guiding your thoughts & actions

God communicates with believers through His Word, prayer & people

I: Hungry? Feel like eating McD can eat in restaurant, drive thru, call delivery or order online. Likewise we have a gracious & accessible God.

A: How often do you spend time reading His Word? Do you worship, thank & talk with God throughout the day?

By God – What is God’s plan for you?

– (Genesis 1:28) Be fruitful & multiply

Not have a dozen children & ask your children to have dozen children (forming your own football team…)

Fruitful in showing & sharing fruits of the spirit

Multiply in sharing the gospel & being used by God to plant seeds in others

God created us to love God, obey God & enjoy His presence

– Come after Jesus – deny self, take up cross & follow Jesus (Mark 8:34)

Christian life not one of wealth & prosperity. Involves hard work, painful lessons & even persecution.

God’s plan is perfect

A: Will you stop trying to control own destiny? Will you seek to know His will & purpose for you? Only way is to know God & communicate with Him.

We have an amazing God!

– Only religion we call our God Abba Father

– Where He is omnipresently everywhere – even within you

– Where His Word speaks directly to us

– Your father is knocking the door. Won’t you speak with God more?

Our Father in Heaven

Adapted from Sun Mar 1 message by Mr Cheah
  • “The Lord’s Prayer” (or should be named “Disciples Prayer”?)
  • Actual Lord’s Prayer is in John 17
  • Prayer involves worshipping & approaching God with due reverence
Our Father in Heaven
  • Faith requirement; acknowledge God as our Father
  • Limitation of earthly fathers but we have a perfect Father who loves, cares & guides us
  • Through faith in Christ we have privilege access to God’s presence
  • Father has authority to withhold & to give
  • Knowing all this allows us to deepen our relationship with God
Honor: Hallowed be your name
  • Our greatest concern is to bring concern to God
  • Hallowed = sacred & holy
  • Requires us demonstrate holiness, separation from evil & devotion to God’s purposes
Expectation: Your kingdom come
  • God’s power, authority & will is forever
  • Are we looking forward & praying for Jesus’ return? We pray for Jesus’ return for the establishment of His eternal kingdom
  • Pray for his purposes & plans to be accomplished on earth even at this time
  • Every one of us in our corner let our light shine as a beacon for God’s word as truth to save
Your will be done
  • God’s purpose is still on the right track even with the sins of men
  • A call for us to pray sincerely to see His plan, purpose & desires to be fulfilled
  • What is His plan? It is in His Word & trusting the Holy Spirit’s guidance
  • Pray, attentive to God’s will & do!
Petition: Give us today our daily bread
  • Right attitude request God to provide for out daily needs
  • Acknowledge & conscious that it’s God who provides
  • We are actually very dependent on God our provider
  • God is loving & provides for His people

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭19‬ NIV)

    1. Make request according to God’s plan with the purpose of honouring Him
    2. Allow God to demonstrate his Fatherly love for us
    3. Supply our basic needs & to serve God more effectively
  • Be content with what you have as what you have is more than enough – you have God!
  • When asking for what you want, ensure that you are right by God & what God gives you blessed others
Forgive us our sins
  • We are sinners; anyone who says otherwise is a liar
  • Prayer is a time to be forgiven of our sins
  • Have compassion on others; forgive others
Dependence: Lead us not into temptation; Deliver us from evil
  • By ourselves we will never win the battle of yielding to temptation – need to rely on our God
  • Pray to get our feet out of the path falling into temptation
  • Deliver us from evil one who is full of schemes attacking God’s plan
  • How? Watch & pray
For yours is the kingdom & the power & the glory forever
  • Acknowledgement of the sovereignty of God
  • One day, every knee will bow
